Who should take this course?

The AWS D1.1 online course is ideal for persons preparing to sit for the CWI exam and have selected D1.1 for the code book portion (Part C of the CWI exam). The course is also ideal for active CWIs interested in familiarizing themselves with the D1.1 code as part of their efforts to comply with the requirements for 9-year recertification. Of course, non-CWIs interested in enhancing their educational credentials will also benefit from this self-paced, online program.

How long do I have to complete this course?

Participants have access to the course content 24-hours a day for a period of 30 days from the date of registration. After this 30-day period, participants will have an additional 10 days to pass the practice exam. The exam can be activated before the end of the 30-day period if the participant has completed all the modules.

Does this course include a completion exam?

Yes. Upon completion of the final course module, participants are prompted to take an online exam designed to evaluate their comprehension of the subject matter. The online practice exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and must be completed within a 2-hour period. Participants who do not attain the 75% passing score may attempt to retake the exam a second time. Participants who pass the online practice exam earn an AWS Certificate of Completion and 4 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). The AWS Certificate of Completion can be downloaded and printed directly from the webpage.

Do I need to purchase any other materials?

Yes. This course is designed to be used in conjunction with the D1.1 code book. Using the code book helps participants replicate and practice the navigational strategies that are required to successfully complete the open book portion (Part C) of the CWI exam.

Do I receive Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for completing this course?

Yes. Participants who receive a score of 75% or above on the practice exam will receive an AWS Certificate of Completion and 4 Professional Development Hours (PDHs).

Can I use these Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for recertification?

Yes. Professional Development Hours (PDHs) earned through AWS online courses can be applied towards recertification, provided the PDHs are earned during the certification period. Description

Section 2 of AWS QC1:2007, Standard for AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors, provides for endorsements that may be added to the CWI and SCWI certifications. Endorsements are defined in AWS QC1 as the approval of an additional skill documented in writing and added to a certification credential.

This endorsement covers four subject areas in AWS D1.1, material and design, fabrication, inspection, and qualification. Subject weights for each of these areas are in conformance with the codebook examination requirements as expressed in section 7.1 of AWS B5.1, Specification for the Qualification of Welding Inspectors.

As of January 1st, 2021 candidates testing to D1.1 codebook will be using the 2020 edition. If you are taking an AWS Seminar, you will be using the 2020 edition.

Aws D1.1 Structural Welding Code

There are no mandatory training requirements. Candidates are encouraged to attend a seminar or self-study to become familiar with AWS D1.1.

Exams

All endorsement exams (with the exception of Structural Drawing Reading) will be offered all over the US in convenient locations using computer based testing with our partners at Prometric. After your application has been submitted to AWS and approved, you will be provided with an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter in order to schedule your appointment through Prometric at one of their centers.

Candidates seeking the AWS D1.1 endorsement shall pass an open book written examination consisting of 50 multiple choice questions in two hours. Candidates are required to use the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code - Steel to answer the questions. Candidates may not use photocopied versions of the standard unless they can supply evidence of purchase of the document.

Successful candidates must correctly answer 72% of the questions to receive this endorsement. Re-examinations for this endorsement shall be in accordance with section 6.2.5 of AWS QC1.
