Docker Tip #65: Get Your Docker Host's IP Address from in a Container Once in a while you may need your Docker host's IP address. Here's how to do it on Docker for Mac, Windows and Linux. In Docker Tip #35 I wrote about connecting to your Docker host from inside of a container but a lot of things have changed since then. Here’s a more updated. So, reading through a bunch of blog posts, it seems like with Apple's Big Sur, VMware Fusion is forced to use Apple's DHCP server and can no longer use their build-in DHCP server. As a result, when creating a docker image, using docker-machine the VMware Fusion driver does not return an IP address for the image's MAC address. Docker-machine ip command gives the following error: docker-machine ip Error: Expected to get one or more machine names as arguments. If no arguments are specified, then it should display IP address of the currently selected machine.
Apr 26, 2020 This machine has been allocated an IP address, but Docker Machine could not reach it successfully. SSH for the machine should still work, but connecting to exposed ports, such as the Docker daemon port (usually:2376), may not work properly. Docker 'waiting for an IP' when starting or creating new machineHelpful? Please support me on Patreon: thanks & pr.
I recently encountered this docker machine IP allocation error while trying to power up my docker machine.
Docker Machine Ip Default
I tried to regenerate-certs and with the existing Network adapter config, or with a new one, but the errors continued to reproduce.
The only fix that worked for me was to restart the virtualbox network adapter. Open the Virtual Box UI, go to Preferences -> Network -> view the name of the adapter.
It’s usually vboxnet0 or vboxnet1.
After manually restarting that network adapter things should work nicely:
This did the trick for me.
If you use the host
network mode for a container, that container’s networkstack is not isolated from the Docker host (the container shares the host’snetworking namespace), and the container does not get its own IP-address allocated. For instance, if you run a container which binds to port 80 and you use host
networking, the container’s application is available on port 80 on the host’s IPaddress.
Note: Given that the container does not have its own IP-address when usinghost
mode networking, port-mapping does nottake effect, and the -p
, --publish
, -P
, and --publish-all
option areignored, producing a warning instead:
Host mode networking can be useful to optimize performance, and in situations wherea container needs to handle a large range of ports, as it does not require networkaddress translation (NAT), and no “userland-proxy” is created for each port.

The host networking driver only works on Linux hosts, and is not supported onDocker Desktop for Mac, Docker Desktop for Windows, or Docker EE for Windows Server.
You can also use a host
network for a swarm service, by passing --network host
to the docker service create
command. In this case, control traffic (trafficrelated to managing the swarm and the service) is still sent across an overlaynetwork, but the individual swarm service containers send data using the Dockerdaemon’s host network and ports. This creates some extra limitations. For instance,if a service container binds to port 80, only one service container can run on agiven swarm node.
